The significance of giving each team member individual attention

Summary: These behaviours may strike you as being quite similar to leadership by the golden rule. Though, the platinum rule is an even stronger rule. The golden rule states that you should treat people how “you wish to be treated.” According to the platinum rule, you must treat others like “they wish to be treated”. Encouragement for personal and professional growth can demonstrate to others that you see potential in them that they would not otherwise recognise.

How can you assemble a workforce that is more harmonious, conscientious, and innovative? Individual employee engagement has been proved to improve performance and retention. What business wouldn’t appreciate that? So, following these strategies will help you genuinely pay more attention to your employees which will have everyone reaping the benefits from the same.

I keep repeating that inclusion and diversity are feelings, not just something to be seen. Giving everyone a fair chance at opportunities, promotions, responsibilities, and training will naturally inspire your staff. For a large portion of my career, I have heard executives say, “I can’t lose that person, they are too good,” rather than creating opportunities for employees along the road and addressing their outward movement by acting from a place of opportunity rather than authority.

According to Deloitte research1, only 22% of executives said their organisations were outstanding at creating a differentiating employee experience, despite the fact that over 80% of executives considered employee experience extremely important (42%).

Sephora has nailed the employee experience by putting a strong emphasis on three crucial areas—training, technology, and development. Starting on day one, all cast members receive training on the primary product categories and they are regularly updated on trends. Because Sephora is so dedicated to training, they even established Sephora University, which provides training to both front-line personnel and corporate staff. Through Sephora’s dedication to fostering, educating, and promoting their top talent, one cast member even advanced from a Beauty Advisor to General Manager of France.2

So, let’s examine how you can attend to each employee’s needs and act as their guardian angel by doing so.

Be open and available

Social-awareness is crucial for maintaining positive working connections. I really support the concept of servant leadership. The World’s Most Powerful Leadership Principle by James Hunter describes the servant leader as someone who is always accessible to assist staff members. Imagine that a person had trouble locating the appropriate data. You may solve problems, offer encouragement, and generally assist your employees in achieving their goals by constantly checking in with them.

Ask them for their thoughts, worries, preferences, and ideas

When I'm not around, what would you do?
Do you mind if I run this by you and get your opinion?
What approach would you take?

Asking questions like these should become a habit. Such inquiries demonstrate to your team members your worth and concern for them. The interaction with the organisation offers the work direction and focus.5 They have a sense of urgency and are excited.

Improve the clarity of your communication

It is your responsibility as a leader to ensure that your team members understand the organization’s goals. Open discussions are intended to be inclusive and broaden horizons. We develop our most original concepts, gain insight, and increase our horizons through them. A big part of developing effective communication with your team is listening to them because doing so will provide you insights into their life.

Impact on Leadership
The best leaders ensure that their teams are engaged and motivated to perform their best work. They go above and beyond. The best method to create teams and enhance workplace culture is to value employees. If your business has a programme for recognising employees, make good use of it to show staff how much you care about them. You can start by letting them know you appreciate them and their efforts by sending them monetary or non-monetary eCards, nominating them for awards, or participating in your years of service programme.
Do you give equal attention and importance to your entire team without any bias?
Do you believe that your employees have been communicating well with you?
3 Immediately Applicable Action Steps
  1. Take an employee survey to find out how your staff is doing and how you can support their success and the success of your business.
  2. Express your appreciation to a team member by highlighting a project or personal objective they have completed.
  3. Be thoughtful and impartial while assigning work, expressing praise, and providing feedback.
